Karina

She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
Proverbs 31:20

She met him because he was searving at the Remar mission next door. They fell in love and got married. Four pregnancies and hundreds of children later their family keeps growing.

She is Karina. Pastors wife, mother of about 20 kids (those are the ones under her roof), 4 of which she gave birth to, and also on the worship team. Her life consists of running a household filled with troubled teens. The girls that make bad choices go to stay with her and Pastor Jose.

But the aspect of Karina that impresses me the most is her faith. She lives a life that is truly trusting in Jesus to provide. I have seen times where their electricity got turned off because they needed to use the money to pay for food for the kids. These things are all taken into stride and faith. She knows God will provide and walks in that faith.

She also always has a smile on her face. Even in the midst of trial and hardship I see her finding reasons to smile and laugh. She is filled with joy because of her faith. Karina’s outlook on life convicts me to walk more in faith and joy. To live life trusting in the promises of God because I trust the God who made those promises.

She Extends Her Hand To The Poor

She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
Proverbs 31:20

Today I shall not review how I feel I am doing because this is an area that is between myself and God. But I will say that according to God’s promises the more we give the more He will entrust us with:

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
Malachi 3:10

He also says that when we give to the poor we are lending to Him and He will pay us back:

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord,
And He will pay back what he has given.
Proverbs 19:17

So you want to give to a charity, but how do you know if its truly a worthy cause or something that will simply cause your money to go to waste? Or how do you know how much of your money will actually be used for the cause they advocate and how much lines the pockets of the charity founders?

One step that can help you is to check if a charity is listed on the IRS’ website as tax-deductable. If they aren’t you might want to find out why prior to giving.

The next step is to find out what percentage of your gift will go towards the actual cause, and checking the authenticity of the organization. There is a fantastic website called Charity Navigator that gives a score for different charities. The score reflects their finances and their accountability/transparency. There are financial reports and information about how the organization is structured. It is a lot of information at your fingertips.

It only takes a few minutes to check out the reliability of an organization but the help you give, to the right place, can truly have a ripple effect for generations.

This topic may make you excited or it might make you cringe. It really depends on your experience. I am not here to try to get you to donate to me, so you can relax a little. I want to talk about good stewardship and some of the tips and tricks I have learned in checking out a charity prior to giving.

We also will go over some ideas of how to give in ways other than monetary. After all, when the above verse was written it was when helping the poor meant to give them food or clothing more than it meant giving them money.

So this week lets look at ways we can give, but give knowing that it will truly be a help and not simply enable.
