This is the category of which I am the most proud. I feel I have truly grown in this area a lot over the past few weeks. Not only have I reigned in my grocery shopping costs but I have also been meal planning, inviting others over, trying new recipes, and having a ball doing it!

Plus I tried canning. I really ought to post about canning in my category If I Can Do It…Anyone Can!

A Recipe For A Good Dinner

There is something about a good dinner party…oh, I mean meeting. Yes we had a meeting and that part went well. But I really do love hostessing. I enjoy setting the table pretty, having delicious food roasting in the oven, and seeing my guests enjoy themselves. There is something wonderful about knowing that people enjoyed themselves and that you got to contribute to that.

Dinner Meeting

It begins!…again! I had a goal a while back to have a dinner and a tea once a month. I have decided to start this once again. This month I chose to host a meeting at my house over dinner. So I spent yesterday cleaning (hence the lack of posting), and today I will be putting the finishing touches of a lovely dinner.

My goal, anytime I have someone over for tea or for food is to make them feel welcomed and blessed by the experience. It is a lot of work but it is so rewarding.

The menu is a roasted chicken dish that has chicken, potatoes, and carrots. Very home comforts style food. My guests are bringing the salad and dessert. I do plan on making iced tea and possibly a hot tea to go with dessert. I haven’t decided on the flavor of either yet but here are the choices I have narrowed it down to:

Iced:
Green tea with fresh mint and lemon balm
Mixed fruit teas
or my expensive but favorite iced tea: Strawberry and Blueberry Iced Tea

The last one is expensive because it is a Teavana blend of Strawberry Lemonade (not actually lemonade) and Blueberry Bliss Rooibos. When making iced tea you need to use twice the normal amount of tea due to the fact that you will be adding ice to it, so when I make iced tea I usually use my less expensive brands.

Hot Tea:
I have found this fantastic tea from the Spice and Tea Exchange called White Rose Tea, it is one of my favorites. But I may also make a fresh herbal, due to the late hour it will be, out of mint and lemon balm (my specialty homegrown tea).

Now I just need to figure out how to decorate the table!

I am excited about this week’s focus, menu planning, because once you find a system that works for you menu planning can be fun! Being single I plan very simply, but simple or complicated, your menu planning time should be something you look forward to. How do you do that? Find out a system that is simple and easy to use, something that you will stick to, and you will enjoy the fruits of you labors. Or should I say the foods of your labors?

There are many tools for menu planning, many guides on how to menu plan so I won’t belabor the point. A simple google search can turn up sites like Organized Home which will help you learn how to menu plan if you do not already know how. But I do have a few tips…

Work with what you like…meaning if you are media driven then use an internet or computer based program. In the book One Bite At A Time there is a whole chapter dedicated to menu planning and in this chapter the author, Tsh Oxenreider, shares her very media based method for meal planning using google calendar, and pinterest (for recipes). Perhaps you are more pencil and paper driven, then try the old fashioned calendar sitting in front of you and clippings from magazines attached. Explore, try different methods until one fits you and stick with it.

Another trip that I use is sticking with recipes that are tried and true and only introducing new ones a little at a time. For me this means a new recipe about once a month. But I only have one mouth to feed, for you maybe it will work better to try something new once a week. Our grocery store puts out a monthly magazine that is free and filled with recipes. I always grab it and go through and tear out the recipes I want to try. Others keep pinterest boards specifically for recipes they want to try. Once I find a recipe I like I write it on a card and put it in my recipe box. My rule is that no recipe goes in the box until I have tried it.

Thats it for now, for the rest of the week I will upload some of my quick and easy recipes, and I will continue to try to find new tips and tools to help us all in this area.
