She Extends Her Hand To The Poor

She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
Proverbs 31:20

Today I shall not review how I feel I am doing because this is an area that is between myself and God. But I will say that according to God’s promises the more we give the more He will entrust us with:

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
Malachi 3:10

He also says that when we give to the poor we are lending to Him and He will pay us back:

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord,
And He will pay back what he has given.
Proverbs 19:17

Helping Hand Up

I live in a very transient area. Meaning, many people move here, stay for a short season, and move on. It also means that there are quite a few needs here. Many people living day to day, not sure where their next paycheck or meal will come from. Due to this we also have those that stand on the side of the road and ask for money.

Now I realize that there are those with true needs out there, those who are left with no other options than to grab a sign and stand on the side of the road and hope for the best. But I also realize that many of these folks are not searching for their next meal or a helping hand but simply money to go buy alcohol or drugs. Recently I came across a solution for this that was genius!

This is not my idea, I stole it from my cousin, and she possibly stole it from someone else. But here are some items you will need:
Ziplock bags (gallon or larger)
Canned food (with pop tops)
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Gift card to a fast food restaurant/grocery store
Other small necessities

Fill the bag and stick it in your car. Then the next time you see someone on the side of the road with a sign you can give them a bag. You will not be enabling those who are trying to feed an addiction but you might be giving enough help to keep someone going.

This is a great project to do with your kids. They will have fun finding things to fill the bag with as well as learn great lessons on giving.

So you want to give to a charity, but how do you know if its truly a worthy cause or something that will simply cause your money to go to waste? Or how do you know how much of your money will actually be used for the cause they advocate and how much lines the pockets of the charity founders?

One step that can help you is to check if a charity is listed on the IRS’ website as tax-deductable. If they aren’t you might want to find out why prior to giving.

The next step is to find out what percentage of your gift will go towards the actual cause, and checking the authenticity of the organization. There is a fantastic website called Charity Navigator that gives a score for different charities. The score reflects their finances and their accountability/transparency. There are financial reports and information about how the organization is structured. It is a lot of information at your fingertips.

It only takes a few minutes to check out the reliability of an organization but the help you give, to the right place, can truly have a ripple effect for generations.

Proverbs 31:20

This topic may make you excited or it might make you cringe. It really depends on your experience. I am not here to try to get you to donate to me, so you can relax a little. I want to talk about good stewardship and some of the tips and tricks I have learned in checking out a charity prior to giving.

We also will go over some ideas of how to give in ways other than monetary. After all, when the above verse was written it was when helping the poor meant to give them food or clothing more than it meant giving them money.

So this week lets look at ways we can give, but give knowing that it will truly be a help and not simply enable.
