My “Children”

He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD. Psalm 113:9

In previous years I read this verse and thought of it more as a consolation prize. I try to trust God’s plans even when they don’t make sense to me and His plan of keeping me single with no kids of my own is a real challenge in trust at times. I would read this verse and think, “thats nice, but I hope that is not God’s plan for me.”

God has changed my views on this altogether.

Over the past five years I have had the opportunity to visit an orphanage in El Salvador named Remar 4 times. Over these 4 trips God has revealed more meaning to this verse than I ever could have imagined. The children at this orphanage have become so near and dear to my heart. I love them all, I care for them all. In addition to that every trip adds a couple of kids that truly feel like my own. I can’t explain the connection that, in spite of language barriers, in spite of distance and time, continues to grow and flourish with each visit. These are my children. These are children of my heart.

Joselin is more of a sister than a daughter to me simply because of our ages. But her and I have many heart to heart talks when we are together. She speaks English and usually helps interpret for our group when we are there.

Nazareth (left) is a precious young girl who had sat with me for hours helping me with my spanish and practicing her english. She and I were very close and had a lot of little jokes between us. Minor (middle) is an awesome young man who is growing into a man of God. He is very sweet and sincere. Monica (right) I have known since the first trip and have always loved her dearly, though she has been more shy and took a little more time to be comfortable with us. She is very sweet and a beautiful young woman of God. These three are siblings.

I apologize for not recalling the name of the girl on the left (there are nearly 100 people there), I am in the middle and the girl on the right is Livia. Livia and I really hit it off this year. She was calling me her mom by the end of our trip. She truly is one of those kids who will forever be a child of my heart.

Pamela and Reina…Pamela is another one that I have known since the first trip and she has grown up so quickly. She is very responsible and is in charge of many things at the orphanage. She is very dear to my heart. Reina is another sister type for me and has grown closer each trip. She is very shy and quiet so it has taken some time for her to start opening up with me but once she did it was a rare gift.

This is Alex. As you can see from the picture he is quite a character. His mother, Nuvia, is another daughter of my heart. Last year she was new to the orphanage and had endeared herself to me. She was emotionally not very healthy at that point but over the past year has grown and healed so much. It was a huge joy to see how well she is doing and how happy her son it, which is a testament to the wonderful place that he and his mother are in, both physically and emotionally.

These are just a few of my family in El Salvador. I wish I could introduce you to them all. Perhaps in November, when I go back, I will post an update. Until then, adios!

About looseleafbri

How do you explain yourself in a short paragraph. What should I talk about? My love for Jesus? The fact that I am fascinated with tea and all that comes along with it? Should I explain that I am single? How do I capture my life in such a brief moment and still make it sound interesting?
